<p>“You want it darker / We kill the flame,” Leonard Cohen sang in the song he released just a few weeks before his death on 7 November 2016. Now, a good nine years later, the words make an even deeper impression. It seems as if at least some sections of humankind really do want nothing better than to kill the flame once and for all. The destructive Russian war of aggression against Ukraine that has lasted more than four years, the massacre committed by Hamas on 7 October 2023 and practically broadcast live on social media, the extreme Israeli attack on the Gaza strip that followed and everything that has happened in the USA and on the geopolitical stage since Donald Trump was re-elected President of the United States have made the flame weaker and weaker. Now it barely flickers and could go out completely at any moment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>MaerzMusik welcomes you into a space where listening has long been a way of being together. This year’s edition unfoldslike a living organism – part sanctuary, part laboratory – holding us through a moment marked by uncertainty, rupture, and possibility. The festival’s works deal with the structures of the present, weaving a subtle but noticeable thread through the programme: sound teaches us new ways of living together, developing alternatives, and renewing our understanding of the world.</p>

And to what or whom do I wish to belong? Who or what can, must, or may I be? These questions and the search for oneself are explored through dance in this piece. The concept of one&rsquo;s own place serves as the central element of the choreography.</p>

<p>To open this 3-day focus and in response to the re-election of Donald Trump, the Berliner Festspiele have invited&nbsp;Jeffrey Goldberg,&nbsp;the distinguished American journalist and editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. In his lecture, as part of the event <a href="https://www.berlinerfestspiele.de/en/reflexe-und-reflexionen/programm/2025/kalender/donald-trump-die-polarisierte-oeffentlichkeit-und-das-ende-der-demokratie">Donald Trump, a Polarised Public and the End of Democracy?</a>, he shed light on the changes in political discourse and the media during the last decade.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jeffrey Goldberg is the editor in chief of The Atlantic, and the moderator of &lsquo;Washington Week with The Atlantic&rsquo; on PBS. Goldberg is the 15th person to serve as editor in chief in The Atlantic&rsquo;s 167-year history. Under Goldberg&rsquo;s leadership, The Atlantic has won the first three Pulitzer Prizes in its history and set new records for subscriptions. The Atlantic has also won the National Magazine Award for General Excellence, the highest honour bestowed by the magazine industry, for the past three years in a row.</p>

<p>Goldberg&rsquo;s most recent book, &lsquo;On Heroism&rsquo;, is an expansion of his explosive reporting about former President Donald Trump&rsquo;s contempt for and repeated disparagement of military service members &ndash; a story he broke four years ago. Goldberg is the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Magazine Award for Reporting, the Daniel Pearl Award for Reporting, the Overseas Press Club&rsquo;s award for human-rights reporting, and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists Prize for best investigative reporter.</p>
