The words "Jazzfest Berlin" are projected onto the wall of the auditorium of the Haus der Berliner Festspiele. Some of the audience have taken their seats in front of it.

The first part of the ARD Jazznacht is dedicated to the essential question “What is jazz?” with, among other projects, the Jazzfest ImproCamp, which took place for the first time in the Jazzfest Berlin’s long history and in which children between the ages of nine and twelve explore their own paths to improvisation, as well as the opening project “Apparitions” with two Berlin children’s choirs, the Ensemble Novembre from Paris and two other French formations. You will also hear the New York piano-guitar duo Sylvie Courvoisier and Mary Halvorson, the trio around bassist Brandon Lopez with drummer Tom Rainey and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and the sadly beautiful collaboration project by Ellen Arkbro and Johan Granden. The recording concludes with impressions of the furious interplay between the pianist dream couple Aki Takase and Alexander von Schlippenbach.

The 60th edition of the Jazzfest Berlin invited you to enjoy four days of jazz far from the mainstream: international artists of the jazz avant-garde as well as musicians and newcomers from Berlin came together and performed at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, the nearby jazz clubs A-Trane and Quasimodo, as well as the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Thanks to our cooperation with the ARD radio network and Deutschlandradio, you once again had the opportunity to follow the festival on air. Alongside background information and discussions, ARD Jazznacht presented highlights from the concert programme of the first three days of the festival – now also available to listen to.
