Berlin, as a cultural and artistic metropolis, continues to be a place of aspiration and refuge for people from around the world. But what does it mean to leave one’s home country, friends and family behind in order to immerse oneself in the international music scene of another city? How do musicians who have chosen Berlin as a place to live and work perceive its diverse arts landscape, and how does their perspective on their own country and on a globalised world in transition change? What does all of this mean for their lives as artists?
Six artists who have made Berlin their home, all internationally acclaimed musicians and participants in this year’s Jazzfest Berlin, offer insights into their lives and artistic work in the German capital. At the same time, they reflect on the importance of an open, inclusive, locally rooted and internationally connected community as a counterforce to the radicalising and divisive forces shaping our societies.
