Betty Olivero in conversation with Martina Seeber
In her music, composer Betty Olivero combines the techniques of Western European modernism –she studied with Luciano Berio - with themes and musical influences from her native Israel. She has been a professor of composition at Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv since 2002. The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra gave the world premiere of her new work “Many Waters” for soprano, orchestra and electronic sounds in Haifa in July. Now the orchestra, conducted by its music director Lahav Shani, is presenting the work together with soprano Hila Baggio for the first time in the Philharmonie Berlin. Betty Olivero talks to music journalist Martina Seeber about the rich-sounding text, the work is based on, and the long history of the creation of “Many Waters”.
