On Caring, Repairing and Healing

This roundtable discussion continues the Gropius Bau’s engagement with the topics of caring, repairing and healing in advance of its exhibition on these themes in 2022. The show is curated by Brook Andrew, Kader Attia, Natasha Ginwala, Bárbara Rodríguez Muñoz and Stephanie Rosenthal with Clare Molloy in collaboration with SERAFINE1369, the Gropius Bau’s In House: Artist in Residence 2021–2022. Together with eightOS workshop facilitator Dmitry Paranyushkin, they consider these topics through a range of non-western epistemologies and Indigenous knowledge systems, inviting various artistic responses. Here, each participant shares their ideas and concepts for the show, as well as their research processes. 

Brook Andrew is an Australian Wiradjuriartist, curator and scholar. His practice imagines alternative futures and challenges limitations imposed by ongoing colonial actions to re-centre Indigenous ways of being. He is co-curator of a group show on caring, repairing and healing which will be presented at the Gropius Bau in 2022. 

Kader Attia grew up in Algeria and in Paris’s banlieue. His works explore the perspective that societies have on their histories – especially regarding experiences of deprivation and suppression, violence and loss, and how this affects the evolution of nations and individuals. Attia is curator of the 12th Berlin Biennale in 2022. 

Natasha Ginwala is a curator, writer and editor. She is the artistic director of COLOMBOSCOPE, Colombo, Sri Lanka and an Associate Curator at the Gropius Bau. She was the artistic director of the 13th Gwangju Biennale with Defne Ayas.
Clare Molloy is Assistant Curator at the Gropius Bau. Together with Stephanie Rosenthal, she has co-curated the exhibitions Wu Tsang: There is no nonviolent way to look at somebody (2019), Lee Mingwei: 禮 Li, Gifts and Rituals (2020) and Zheng Bo: Wanwu Council 萬物社 (2021).

Dmitry Paranyushkin is the founder of Nodus Labs, creator of InfraNodus network thinking tool, and co-founder of eightOS. In his practice, he combines choreography, science and code to create human / machine software. He presented his work at Gwangju Biennale (2021), Palais de Tokyo (2018) and in other contexts.

Stephanie Rosenthal is the Director of the Gropius Bau. Here, she has curated internationally acclaimed exhibitions such as Wu Tsang: There is no nonviolent way to look at somebody (2019), Garden of Earthly Delights (2019) and Otobong Nkanga: There's No Such Thing as Solid Ground (2020).

SERAFINE1369 is an artist and dancer who engages deeply with questions of intimacy, technology, alienation and boundaries. Their practice unfolds at the interstices of dance, philosophy and divination. From 2021 to 2022, SERAFINE1369 is In House: Artist in Residence at the Gropius Bau.

Magnus Elias Rosengarten (moderator) is a writer, artist and co-curator of Ámà: 4 Days on Caring, Repairing and Healing. He has written for ContemporaryAnd Magazine (C&), Artforum and Berlin Biennale as well as presenting work at the Kraine Theatre, New York City (2016) and the California African American Museum, Los Angeles (2018).
